In the wake of the success of films like “American Pie” and “Road Trip” Hollywood has embraced the teenage sex comedy for a whole new generation. “Eurotrip” is the latest entry from the Producers of “Road Trip” and “Old School” and it is actually quite a funny flick that is also in it’s own way a little sweet too. Scott Mechlowicz plays Scott, a recent high school grad whose girlfriend (Kristen Kreuk) broke up with him and has made it so public that a band performs a rather catchy tune entitled “Scotty Doesn’t Know.” Her reason for breaking up with him is because she finds him to be too predictable AKA a boring nice guy.

Scott has an e-mail pen pal who he mistakenly thinks is a man. When the pen pal tells Scott that she his coming to the States to meet him, Scotty freaks and thinks he’s attracted some perverted guy and under the influence of more than a few drinks drops a note to his cyber buddy to basically get lost. When Scott realizes the next morning the person who he had been chatting with is a really a hot German chick from Berlin, he throws caution to the wind and takes his friend (Jacob Pitts) with him to Europe where they encounter various characters and hook up with two other friends from their graduating class in France. One of them is the lovely Michelle Trachtenberg, who played “Dawn” on “Buffy The Vampire Slayer.” Together they go on a European odyssey in search of Scott’s gal pal and in the process undergo various misadventures.

There are plenty of cameos in the film that include Matt Damon, Vinnie Jones, Lucy Lawless, David Hasselhoff, and Joanna Lumley. Scott Mechlowicz looks as though he could be related to Freddie Prinze, Jr. while Jacob Pitts looks like he is the younger brother of “Saturday Night Live” alumni David Spade. Michele Trachtenberg is hot in this film. However I hate to break it to all you guys out there but despite the artwork on the DVD cover, we do not see Trachtenberg’s bare breasts or anything else though she shows a lot of skin in a bikini. The unrated version of “Eurotrip” features some altered scenes with more nudity than seen in the theaters and bit more sexual situations to titillate the viewer. A neat feature on this DVD allows the user to jump directly to the ten unrated nude scenes in the film or examine the eight other unrated sequences not seen in theaters. This is supported by a reel of 13 unrated deleted scenes with optional filmmaker commentary and a videotaped introduction (18:52) and an alternate ending (2:44) presented in a letterboxed (1.85:1) aspect ratio. While the alternate ending seems more likely than the film’s current conclusion, I think for the film they made, the filmmakers made the right choice in changing it. I mean it is not as though anything in this film should be taken seriously anyway.

Filmmakers Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaeffer also participate in two feature length screen specific commentaries. One is more of the serious traditional commentary one might expect on a DVD while the other one dubbed the “Party Commentary” has them taking shots for every unrated scene, nude scene, and what not that appears while they watch the film and get drunk. Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaeffer directed “Eurotrip” collectively, but the DGA would only allow one of them to receive credit. So the filmmakers have included a short depicting how the one who received Director’s credit was ultimately chosen (1:33). They even show footage from a bootleg DVD of the film purchased in the Chinatown section of Manhattan back in March of 2004 so those who might be tempted to purchase illegal copies may be dissuaded upon seeing and hearing the crap picture and audio quality when compared to the official release (3:39).A gag reel is also presented (5:28) and it is actually funny to watch.

Additional extra value features include a music video (3:36) and a sing along for “Scotty Doesn’t Know” performed by Lustra (3:36), CD soundtrack spot (: 34), a photo gallery, onscreen production notes, and cast and crew biographical notes. A featurette on the filming of the nude beach sequence (6:14) wraps up the extra features on this DVD release.

The picture and sound presentation is very good with a sharp bright transfer and a nice well rounded 5.1 Surround Soundtrack with a choice of English or French Language playback. An English Dolby Surround Soundtrack and English Captions for the hearing impaired as well as French and Spanish Language Subtitles are encoded as options too. Sneak peek trailers for “Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy,” “Along Came Polly,” “Envy,” and “The Chronicles Of Riddick” precede the feature (4:03).

I enjoyed “Eurotrip” much more than I expected to and think it is definitely worth a look. “Eurotrip: Unrated” will debut on DVD-Video at retailers on and offline on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 courtesy of DreamWorks Home Entertainment.
